KEDARNATH & TUNGNATH VALLEY : A SPIRITUAL & RELIGIOUS JOURNEY

Dev Bhoomi “Uttarakhand” is one of the most mysterious & desired Himalayan destinations. In recent year I personally have travelled extensively in the Valleys of Gharwal and Kumaon & can say that the Kedarnath Tungnath Valley stands amongst the top in the “Must Visit List”. I personaly feel even more blessed to have my roots from the quaint hamlet of Bhiri in this valley. Around 150 years back my ancestors chose to make their home in this beautiful valley just alongside the River Mandakini with the view of the Empowering Charabari Glacier up ahead. Several generations later I today continue exploring the treasures of this valley.

Starting with what the valley is most famous and visited for, is the Kedarnath temple. Kedarnath probably the most popular Shiva Temple & is the Eleventh of the 12 Jyotirlings. It is the fist Panchkedar’s and legend says that the stone in the temple is nothing but the ‘Hump of the Bull’ which Shiva had disguised himself as, while hiding from the Pandavas. The valley is home to not just this one but two more Panch Kedar’s namely Madmaheshwar (Navel & Belly) & Tungnath (Arms). The last two of the Panch Kedar’s Kalpeshwar (Hair) & Rudranath (Face) although not in the same district or valley are not too far. Just a short drive from Chopta (commonly called Mini Switzerland of India), one can easily reach the starting points of these two remaining Panch Kedars.

Madmaheshwar is less frequented due its remote location, difficultly in reaching and also due to lack of good facilities enroute the temple. But has never not stop the seeking Shiva devotees from paying a visit to the Madmaheshwar Temple which has very high spiritual significance and a visit is none less mesmerising than what one can hope.

Another lesser known aspect of the Panch Kedar, are the winter homes of these idols when the main Temples are closed and inaccessible in winter, these are the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath and the Makkumath Temple in Makku village.  While the Omkareshwar temple is the winter home to both the idols from Kedarnath & Madhmaheshawar temples; Makkumath is winter home to the Tungnath Idol. So even when the Kedarnath yatra is closed in winter for 6 months, one can have beautiful darshan in these ancient temples here. While the Kedarnath Complex work has rightly been on the priority and expected to complete for the next year yatra, the Government has recently sanctioned a significant budget for the development of the Omkareshwar Temple complex. This means the valley would see more religious tourists through the year.

Hotel Mystic Kailasha is right on the Rishikesh Kedarnath highway at the junction of Tungnath Makkumath. This junction is also the starting point of  a route popular with Bird Watchers. On the circular route after a 20-25 drive to Makku temple the road continues to Chopta via  the forest area of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and then one can return to Mystic Kailasha after visiting Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath which is just 10 kms from Mystic Kailasha.

The Kedarnath Tungnath valley also is home to one of the most popular and powerful Shakti Peeth’s, Kalimath. Around 18 kms from Mystic Kailasha towards Kedarnath, the Kalimath temple is unique for many reasons but mainly because it is the only place where goddess Kali is worshipped along with her sisters Laxmi and Saraswati. It is also unique because there is no idol which is worshipped here instead just the Shri Yantra which covers a kund where Kaali is said to have disappeared after Shiva calmed her down. The main pooja of the Yantra is done only by the head priest at midnight and the Kund is opened just once a year on the Ashtami of Navratra’s.

Another gem to explore in the valley is the temple town of Guptkashi (12 km from Mystic Kailasha) known for the popular Vishwanath temple which is similar to the one in Varanasi(Kashi) and also the Ardhanareshwar Temple (A form of Shiva depicting half Shiv & half Parvati). Guptkashi is also popular amongst the Kedarnath Helicopter ticket seekers because  this is where the first set of Helipads are based.

Just a few hundred meters distance from the Helipads in Guptkashi is the small hamlet of Narayankoti. This is something a deserving explorer would not want to skip whilst in this area or even whilst you wait for your chopper or upon return back. Yes its unfortunately today due to the natural disasters and also negligence only 29 of the original 360 temple group are still standing. While today one can only imagine the aura and energy surrounding this place at the time when all the temples were intact, it is essential that whilst we visit this place we feel the need to safeguard what’s left and take responsibility of doing so.

Temple building, their architecture and designs is something we see, witness and understand their history of but another dimension of beliefs is touched upon when we hear about the Dancing Gods of Gharwal & Kumaon. Even as a kid the stories of God & Goddesses of the Gharwal & Kumaon regions have always amused me. And the most unbelievable were the one’s about Gods and Goddesses dancing & performing (scientifically unbelievable  acts) through the medium of a human. When I enquired in depth recently I learnt about the practice of ‘Jagar’ a practice to awaken local deities from their dormant stage and ask for Favors or remedies. It’s not that have a scheduled appointment with the Gods & Godesses but then the local always used the mode of Music to awaken them the and medium through which the awakened gods act is a Human Body. To me it all seemed a myth until I visited and witnessed for myself the same at the Jakh Devta Temple during the fair held every year on the 2nd Day of the Vaishakh month. I witnessed the feat of a person said to be medium the Devta (God of Rain) chose, walking of flaming embers. Tons of wood brought in by the devotees was piled up in a pit and burnt the night before and it is on the next day that the God is invited through the mode of Music and he in a human form was dancing and walking on the flaming embers.  I was told by locals that scientist from around the world have also come can checked the person and had not reasoning as to why he remained unhurt or unaffected despite the high temperatures.

Be it the limitation of what science can prove today or be it the act of God, for me it was unexplained and thus a seed of belief was certainly laid.

A short drive of 7 kms from the Mystic Kailasha, Bhiri takes you to the Sidhpeeth Maa Durga Temple in Fegu which is very popular with the locals.  Everyday morning & evening times the Brahmin’s of Temriya village perform the Pooja in the temple. Also periodically once in few years the Doli of the Devi leaves the temple complex and after a long precession of weeks, passing and stopping at various villages in the region the Doli reaches the Kedarnath Temple where behind the closed doors the Devi meets the Idol coming from Ukhimath just before the Jyotirling temple doors are opened for devotees at start of the Yatra season. A visit to this Ancient temple during the time of the pooja is something special and one must not miss whilst in the area.

Another gem in this region that until recent went unnoticed and most travellers were even unaware of its existence; that is the Kartik Swami Temple. Perched at a height of 2424 m above sea level offering a splendid view of the snow clad Himalayan peaks right from Bunderpunch, Kedarnath Dome, Chaukhambha, Neelkant Parvat, Nanda peak, Trishul and many more; the Temple is just 38 kms away and a perfect one day excursion from Mystic Kailasha. Its not only for those wanting to connect to sacredness of this temple but also for nature lovers who want to enjoy the beauty that nature beholds.

The spiritual journey in the valley cannot end unless one sets foot in the Triyuginarayan Temple, this is the very place where the Celestial Wedding of Parvati & Shiva took place and every since the Akhand Jyot has been kept burning by the local devotees. An increasing popular & go-to “Destination Wedding” location, the temple provides  the perfect ambience & serenity for a Vedic Wedding Ceremony. Mystic Kailasha with its luxurious rooms and best in the valley hospitality service is not only a convenient drive to the temple but also a perfect location for stay & hosting all pre and post wedding functions.

While planning a visit to Jyotirling of Kedarnath Temple, I have noticed travellers keep limited time in hand and are always in a hurry to visit the Jyotirling and rush back. It is rather unfortunate that they miss out a chance to visit the lesser popular places which provide the perfect opportunity to balance one’s inner and outer self. People also miss out on the opportunity of learning about the history & significance of these temples, enjoy the beauty nature  has to offer and the culture of the region. Rather than just a day visiting the Kedarnath temple one must keep a few more days to cover the other popular places like Triyuginarayan Temple, Temple towns of Guptkashi & Ukhimath, Makkumath, Tungnath, Deoriatal, Jaagdhar, Fegu, Kalimath, Kartik Swami Temple and Chopta.

Several budget homestays, lodges & hotels are available in the area however if you are looking at Luxury, Comfort and excellence in service the options are only a limited few. Our Luxury Hotel, Mystic Kailasha – Empowering Living Space at Bhiri, which just started in April 2023, although a new has already started created its niche more than a few reasons.

– Strategically located on the highway it is just a few kms before both the towns of Ukhimath & Guptkashi, making it convenient driving distance to all the tourist destinations and also the Helipads.

– The viewing galley of our Roof top Restaurant Omkara Kitchen is not just topping the Instagram (#mystickailasha) charts for the scenic views of the snow clad himalayas but also for its cuisine. One can choose from a wide variety of cuisines such as Pahadi, Indian, South Indian, Continental & Chinese. A wide variety of Himalayan Herbal Tea’s, finest coffee and shakes go perfect with the and also a variety of Deserts.

Rishikesh through to Kedarnath & Tungnath Valley – A Paradise for Nature & Adventure Lovers.

The Kedarnath – Tungnath Valley located in the upper part of the Himalayas of Uttrakhand is undoubtedly most famous for the Kedarnath Temple but there are plenty of reasons other than Religious & Spirituality that the valley is become very popular for. With the ongoing Rs 12000 crore investment project by the Government of India on the 900 kms long “Chardham All Weather Road” the road journey from Delhi to Rishikesh & further onwards to Kedarnath-Tungnath through the year has become far more convenient. More than 90% of work on the Rishikesh- Kedarnath road is completed upto the village of Bhiri so you can expect a smooth ride.

The Himalayan valley of Kedarnath Tungnath, have always been a dream of many to visit. So be it for adventure or simply for relaxation amidst the serene surroundings, be it for couple of days over the weekend or for long durations, there is loads to keep your adrenaline pumped or simply worth taking a break from your hectic life and connecting with your inner self up here in the Himalayas.

For the adventure seekers fun in the valley begins right at Rishikesh  & Shivpuri, where one can engage in some thrilling white water rafting and also do some adventure activities such as bungee jumping, zip line & flying fox. Personally my first experience of Rafting on the Ganges was around 20 years back but even today the river excites me just the way I was the first time. So its no surprise this is the Capital for Rafting activity in India. Besides the monsoon season when rafting and adventure activities are closed, anytime is a perfect time to have a good time. One can choose from a short 6-9 kms stretch or give a shot with the 16-24 kms stretch of rafting. With loads of adventure seekers visiting the area its again no surprise that this is the home to Indian highest bungee jumping spot and every year a new adventure themed parks opening in the area.

As one moves further north to the upper part of the valley, there is a drastic shift in the essence of adventure. The Mountains & Mother Nature take over from the machines & engineering wonders at Shivpuri to provide another level of thrill.  Adventure up in the Kedarnath – Tungnath Valley is all about exploring the mountains be it on your feet, a bike ride or a drive in comfort of your four wheeler. With nearly a hundred thousand hectares the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary is one of its kind worth exploring. So if ever get that inner call all I can suggest is to simply pack you gear & bagpack and head straight up to the Kedarnath Tungnath valley in Rudraprayag District of Uttarakhand.

The available trekking options range from beginner to moderate and then there are those lesser frequented paths to walk on for the experienced trekkers. If you looking at something light on the Chopta region is probably an ideal place to begin with. A one day return Deoriatal trek from Saari Village, or the Chopta to Tungnath, Chandrashila & same day return are very popular and convenient in summer time. One can up the level to moderate & difficult by doing the same in winter when there is a cover of white sheet all along the route. A lot of overnight trekkers including group tours for children combine the Deoriatal & Tungnath starting from Saari Village or even Ukhimath and ending at Chopta.

Moderate to difficult level adventure seekers could include in their plan a Trek from Ransi to Madmaheshwar,  the 15 km return between Burwa & Ransi or the Kedarnath to Vasuki Tal trek. For Mountain cycling enthusiasts several options for short rides are there in and around Bhiri Village but if you love being out all day cycling then birding circuit which is around 56 kms is a great option. Start early morning from Mystic Kailasha Hotel in Bhiri and move uphill towards Makkumath, Jagpura to Chariakor the highest point on the route followed by a descend back via Ukhimath or the same way back to your comfort pad at Mystic Kailasha in Bhiri. Besides the sighting of various species of birds one also can enjoy the flora and fauna of the Kedarnath wildlife sanctuary. A rather more difficult route option would be cycling from Mystic Kailasha Hotel in Bhiri to Mansoona and ahead to the smaller villages in the valley towards Ransi and return via either same way or another offbeat route passing through Jagi. This route would be around 66 kms long so heading out early morning is always recommended.

For those looking for something even more extreme give a shot to any of the below trek routes. But remember these not only require a relatively high level of physical and mental fitness but participate only through a competent trekking company having a team of experienced experts & also the right gear to make such treks memorable for you. Some of the extreme long distance trekking routes include, Ransi to Kedarnath via Madhmaheswar & through the Mandani Valley where one reaches heights of nearly 5000 meters.

Kedarnath which already is a 20 kms trek from Gaurikund by is the starting & end point for some of the most scenic and extreme treks in the entire Gharwal region. Some of these include the include the Yembuk Col, Chorabari Glacier trek and the 68 km long Nalangaon to Kedarnath trek via Mayali pass. However the most exciting and extreme undoubtedly would be the trek between Badrinath & Kedarnath. Mythological tales mention about the priest using this route everyday to perform pooja at both the holy shrines on same day; the route was lost for centuries and rediscovered recently in 2008 however the typical itinerary suggested by trekking companies is of 10-15 days.

The valley as I mentioned is not only about treks and bicycle rides so if like me you don’t have that liking or ability to do the long treks and just love being in the mountains for its beauty; the valley has its own offerings for you. You can simply shortlist from a long list of options an check-into one of the properties as per your budget and liking. Something ideal would be convenient and approachable from the highway, access to the river side and lastly a scenic view of the snow clad Himalayas. This couple with comfort and good food are the key ingredients to a perfect Himalayan Getaway.

One can easily find basic rooms in a lodge or homestay in the range of Rs 1000/- to Rs 2000/- per day on dual or triple occupancy. Comfort rooms in good properties like the ‘Rustic Themed Family Room’ at Mystic Kailasha would be in the range of Rsv4000 to Rs 6000/- a day. One thing that surely is in shortage up in the valley premium properties maintaining & offering a high quality standard through the year. A premium room such as the 500 sq ft Studio room at Mystic Kailasha Bhiri with all amenities including dual type air-conditioning, fire place, dresser, private balcony with swing and coffee table, ensuite-pantry, study table & mood lighting to go along with top quality in room dinning service could cost depending on season in range of Rs 7000 to Rs 9000/-.

Be it Adventure or pure Relaxation whatever you looking for, Mystic Kailasha, Luxury Hotel at Bhiri, few kilometres short of Ukhimath & Guptkashi which opened doors in April 2023 undoubtedly is the perfect choice for a premium travellers looking for a home like comfort in the mountains. Besides loads of amenities to pamper you, Omkara Kitchen the Roof Top restaurant at Mystic Kailasha which serves a wide range of cuisine ranging from Homestyle Pahadi delicacies to Oriental, Continental & South Indian cuisines; is bound to make your taste buds melt. Mystic Kailasha stands out from other properties in this area not merely because its each room is designed to perfection or only because it offers the best dinning experience in the valley, but because it strikes the right balance between Luxury, Heritage & a Meaningful stay. Difficult to express in words but right from the moment one enters the property the walls of Mystic Kailasha start telling a tale of the Lord and the Land.

Mystic Kailasha is not just the start point for your mountain cycling experience, bird watching tour or treks but the start point of creating memories to cherish for a lifetime. Every morning simply tie your laces and head outdoors to enjoy the mountains, snow, riverside, fields and chirping sound of the birds simply because you are confident of getting back to the warmth of your Abode in the Himalayas; ‘Mystic Kailasha-Empowering Luxury Stay’.

A Trek to Celestial Heights : Mystical Kailasha to Chandrashila via Deoriatal Blogs

The “Sari – Deoriatal – Chandrashila Trek” is a popular trekking route from Mystic Kailasha. This Trekking route in Gharwal region of Uttrakhand, takes you through the Kedarnath Sanctuary which has some of the most breathtaking landscapes, serene forests, and also offers stunning views of the snow-capped peaks.

Here’s an overview of the trek:

Day 1 Short drive from Mystic Kailasha to Saari followed by trek to Deoriatal: The 2.5 kms trek starts from the village of Sari (22 kms from Mystic Kailasha). The hike up to Deoriatal, a beautiful lake surrounded by dense forests and offers reflections of the Chaukhamba peak in its waters takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. It’s a great spot to camp and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

Day 2 Trek from Deoriatal to Chopta: After a comfortable night of camping at Deoriatal, one wakes up to the beautiful view of the majestic Chaukhamba mastiff. The 14 km long trek to Chopta which is also referred to as the “Mini Switzerland” of India includes ascending and descending the mountains and walking through dense mountains. One can enjoy beautiful view of the Chandrashila peak from Jhandi top and also stop over for lunch (normally packed) at the Rohini Bugyal (meadow). As the routes are not well marked and also cross forests it is highly recommended to trek with a guide or a tour organiser. Once must not confuse between the two Chopta’s, both in the district of Rudraprayag.

Tungnath Temple: After enjoying the beautiful sunset from Chopta and spending the night in a campsite or homestay the highest Shiva temple in the world awaits you next day. The day begins with a 3.5 kms steep trek up to the 1000 plus years old Tungnath Temple which is also one of the Panch Kedar’s.

Chandrashila Peak: After visiting Tungnath, the final leg of the trek takes you to the Chandrashila Peak. Although just 1.5 kms it’s a steep ascent from Tungnath. At the summit, you are rewarded with the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Peak, and Chaukhamba. The descent from Chandrashila to Chopta is fast and easier. ,

The best time to undertake this 3 days trek is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) seasons when the weather is pleasant, and the skies are clear.

As with any trek, it’s essential to be well-prepared with proper trekking gear, clothing, and a first-aid kit. Mystic Kailasha, can always help you arrange a local guide for a more enjoyable experience. In above mentioned period the trek is of moderate difficulty, so a reasonable level of fitness should see you through easily. A snow trek on the same route is also conducted by some specialised trek organisers during Winter but that needs a much higher level of fitness and planning and it is highly recommended by Mystic Kailasha that this be done only through a Professional Trek Organiser.
